GROSSMONT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC & COLOR GUARD
Band Programs
Beginning Orchestra/Band: Become a part of the GHS band or orchestra tradition! This class is for students with little or no musical experience but would like to learn how to play in an orchestra or band instrument. School instruments may be borrowed at no charge for those looking forward to joining us in concerts, on the field or at music festivals. Once proficient, our beginners move up to one of our other amazing band, orchestra or drum lines for more fun high school experiences.
Concert Band: This is an intermediate level band perfect for students coming out of middle school and eager to learn more and have fun. Concert band students may be invited to join the Royal Blue Regiment Marching Band, jazz band, symphonic band, and orchestra in parades, concerts, music festivals and more! Take the next step in your musical adventure!
Symphonic Band: This is the ultimate performance group for our advanced musicians. The Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble includes participation in the Royal Blue Regiment, the GHS Symphony Orchestra, contests, parades, concerts in theme parks and more. Members in this ensemble need to plan on activities, rehearsals and travel outside of school hours. Many of our students graduate with honors and earn music scholarships to university or entrance to military academies.
Orchestra: This is an intermediate level ensemble perfect for string players coming out of middle school and eager to learn more and have fun. Orchestra students often team up with other musicians in the Royal Blue Regiment, Color Guard, or join one of our string ensembles like the famous Footnotes for more fun experiences! Orchestra students can plan on having concerts, special performances and unique and fun musical experiences. You may be invited to join the Symphony Orchestra
Symphony Orchestra/Philharmonic: One of Grossmont’s best musical experiences! The Grossmont Symphony is for our most advanced string players who can look forward to the most amazing concerts and special events that include performing some of the world’s most beautiful music complete with winds and percussion, even choir! Members in this ensemble need to plan on rehearsals and travel outside of school hours. Many of our students graduate with honors and earn music scholarships to university.
Percussion Ensemble: This group is for the musicians coming out of Beginning band and wanting to learn something more technical. This drums and mallet only class is for musicians wanting to do the ultimate in percussion performance. Forming the nucleus of the Royal Blue Regiment Drumline in the fall, this group goes on to lead us in parades and field competitions performances. Then as winter break starts the ensemble starts prepping for Winter Drumline with such organizations as the American DrumLine Association. Members in this ensemble need to plan on many rehearsals outside of school hours, travel, be physically fit and ready to rock.
Jazz Band: An especially fun group for intermediate to advanced students (anyone can try out though) who enjoy big band, pop tunes, show tunes, pep band and 20th century Jazz improvisation. Students in this ensemble work with a rhythm section that includes drums, vibes, bass and piano! Jazz band members can also be a part of the Royal Blue Regiment and our other bands. Plan on extracurricular activities, performances and rehearsals outside of school hours.
Color Guard: Sometimes called the Sport of the Arts, the Color Guard is a team that performs with the Royal Blue Regiment Marching Band during the fall for field competitions, parades, and football games. As winter break starts and goes, the team starts gearing up to compete in Winter Guard with organizations such as Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC). Team members learn to toss, twirl, spin and catch colorful flags, ‘rifles’ and ‘sabers’ while dancing in time to music. Open to all students, especially any with dance experience and who enjoy building confidence and self-reliance. Plan on activities, practice and travel outside of school hours.
